How to Reach Xennials, the Ignored Micro Generation

Right in the middle, sandwiched in between the pessimistic Generation Xers and the optimistic Millennials, lies a very important group of people who are both underestimated and under-reached.

Meet the Xennials. Xennials were born between 1977 and 1983. They are most often described as those who grew up with analog childhood and digital adulthood. Here lies the perfect mix of the past and the future. These are the people who didn’t get email accounts until college, talked to their friends on both the house phone and basic instant messaging services, spent their childhoods building forts outside during the day and watching VHS tapes from the local video rental store at night. We went to our school’s computer lab to insert a floppy disk and rock out on a game The Oregon Trail or Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego. In college, we were able to talk on our cell phones for free after 9 pm and the bill for going over your text limit was monstrous.

Because the year span for Xennials is so small at only six years, Xennials are not considered their own generation, but a micro one.

An associate professor of sociology Dan Wood Sociology at the University of Melbourne, told Mamamia: “The idea is there’s this micro or in-between generation between the Gen X group — who we think of as the depressed flannelette-shirt-wearing, grunge-listening children that came after the Baby Boomers and the Millennials — who get described as optimistic, tech savvy and maybe a little bit too sure of themselves and too confident.”

Fascinating. This group bridges the gap between Generation X the children of Baby Boomers and Millennials, who are digital natives and have never been without the constant communication of the internet. Xennials tend to be both pragmatic, driven and creative, the best of both worlds.

Reaching this generation will be key to business marketing and will require a different way of communication. They have digital blind spots and longer attention spans. However, they are all still very much invested in American culture and economy
