Social Media Etiquette and Your Business: What Not to Do

Social media is vital for today’s businesses. It’s a quick, easy and cheap way to build a client base and share your company’s products with the world. Since social media is a relatively new tool to use in business, it’s very important to observe the unwritten etiquette behind each post. Here are eight things not to do on your business’s social media account.

  1. Don’t Spam. One or two posts a day is typically enough for most social media platforms. The exception is Twitter where 4-6 tweets a day is appropriate. Don’t join tons of groups or ask to friend dozens of strangers. It’s also not appropriate to continually ask for more followers or retweets. Be cool, get your message across clearly and effectively and followers will find you.
  2. Don’t Lose Your Identity. Your message is your product with social media. Don’t share pictures or quotes or links to items which do not represent your company well professionally. Always ask yourself if the post will communicate positively with your customers. Make sure your logo and products are represented consistently across all your social media accounts.
  3. Don’t Repeat Yourself. Frequent postings on the same topic will grate your follower’s nerves. Your primary goals on social media is to entertain your followers and inform them of your business’s merchandise or services. Repeating yourself alienates your readers by boring them and irritating them. Continue to pique their interests with fresh posts.
  4. Don’t Forget Proper Spelling and Grammar. English majors rejoice! We were always told we’d never rule the world, but social media has proven us wrong. Spelling and grammar matter now more than ever in the world of social media. Proofread, proofread and proofread some more in order to maintain credibility.
  5. Don’t Overuse Hashtags. #it #is #annoying.
  6. Don’t Forget to Post. A dead social media account kills sales for your business. Don’t create an account only to give up on it. Breathe life into your Internet presence with daily posts.
  7. Don’t Have a Blank Profile. Fill out the profile on your social media account with as much information as possible. Be sure the link to your business website is up front and center where it is easily accessible.
  8. Don’t Be Detached. Interact with your followers! Answer their questions. Give witty responses to their comments. Thank them for their likes, follows and shares. Social media is all about the relationships we build with consumers. Build a good one!
